Poor but deserving students who belong to the cultural minority are now the direct beneficiary of a government schalorship program for the year 2008 as part of the government's effort to help the poor achieve quality education.
NCIP Scholarship Program This scholarship program is dubbed as the "NCIP Scholarship Program". The National Commision on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) is one of the main components in helping the Lumad Subanen in the countryside including the province of Zamboaga del Sur. Zamboanga del Sur is one of the provinces with a Subanen populace settling in the towns of Lapuyan, Kumalarang, Bayog, Sominot and Midsalip. As per assessment majority of its members lack education and illiteracy has been observed. But with the Department of Education's (DepED) intervention, the illiteracy problem went down compared to several years back, according to some DepED officials. Alternative Learning System or ALS helped a lot in curbing the problem of illiteracy. 13000 Subanen will Benefit Meanwhile, the government has allocated P85 million pesos for the said scholarship program that would benefit close to 13,000 Subanen students whose parents are really handicapped in sending their children to school. This program is intended not only for college students but high school and elementary ages can also avail of the program. The beneficiaries from the elementary level will receive P 1,000 financial assistance, high school beneficiaries will receive P2,500 assistance and a college beneficiary will enjoy the P5,000semestral assistance. In the previous years, the NCIP helped at least 13,154 poor but deserving Subanen students in their continuous quest for education. Applicants may just visit their NCIP office for further details. It can be recalled that the NCIP office here in Pagadian City received criticisms from Subanen leaders in Zamboanga del Sur for turning its back to the Indigenous People (IP's). With this scholarship this could somehow change the wrong notion that the IP's were neglected. Last update : 11-12-2007 17:00
