38th-araw-awards-night
On its 38th Araw ng Pagadian, the city government under the leadership of re-elected Mayor Samuel S. Co, gave recognition to the Nine Most Outstanding Pagadianons who in one way or another brought the city to national and international prominence.

 

Selection Criteria:

50% Outstanding Accomplishment (national and international prominence)

30% Impact of the achievemen to the commmunity, and

20% Residency Status

The committee this year approved and identified the sectors from where to choose the probable nominees.          Namely:

  1. Health Sector
  2. Education
  3. Sports
  4. Agriculture
  5. Arts
  6. Civic
  7. Science and Technology.

 

The Nine Outstanding Pagadian Citizens

 

            1. HON. ANTONIO HERRERA CERILLES                     

tony-cerilles--awardee-160.jpgCerilles is a distinguished fellow Pagadianon by virtue of the magnificient performance in the Halls of Congress and the principal author of the "Clean Air Act" and many others, to include the act creating the Dona Josefina H. Cerilles State College. He became a Deputy Majority Floor Leader representing Mindanao in the 12th Congress and a member of the Election Tribunal, one of the most distinguished committee. When he became the Secretary of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Congressman Cerilles changed the direction of the department into a people-oriented department. Cerilles worked for his people not only in the second district of the province but for the whole of Zamboanga del Sur.

             {sidebar id=5}2. DR. ENRIQUE T. ONA, MD

One of the most highly regarded recipient of different national and international prestigious awards in the medical profession,drona_unsapa.jpg Dr. Ona is an expert in Kidnet Transplant. He is now the Deputy Director of the Philippine National Kidney Institute and holds other national and international positions, such as Transplant surgeons, Vascular Surgery, Transplant Societies, and Kidney Foundation. Dr. Ona has been an editorial consultant of the Philippine Journal of Surgeon Specialities and several others. He also recieved special citations and awards here and abroad. Currently, he is also the Governor of the American College of Surgeons and Director of the International Society for CardioVascular Surgery, National Research Council and International Venous Digest Director. Dr. Ona who loves writing and research, posted several proposals and books like the Philippines as a Center of Care for Asia for Kidney Transplantation. 

            3. ARTHUR GREGORY VIRATA

virata.jpgAs young as he is, Arthur Gregory had been a consistent mathematician. He was a Bronze Medalist in Rapid Calculations Skills in Year 2006 during the "I Love Mathematics" Summer Camp competition in Qingdao, China.  He was also the Bronze Medalist in problem solving at the Australian Mathematics Competition for the Western Pacific Awards, Junior Division Australian Mathematics Trust, University of Canberra.  It may be recalled that Arthur Gregory, is also a Gold Pin Awardee in 2004-2005 during the Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) Worldwide competition. Not only as a mathematician, but also he excelled in the 26th National Super Quiz Bee, Science Quiz and Academic Derby and became the National Champion.

            4. ERNESTO FERNANDEZ

Little known National Master provided the only bright note on the face of another all Chinese show, pulling off a dramatic upset win over compatriot Grand Master Rogelio Antonio Jr. in the 7th round and barging into unfamiliar territory in the 2007 Philippine Open International Championship at the El Centro of Legenda Hotel in Subic.  As a result , Fernandez exploited a rare mistake by the white playing Antonio in their end game duel and came out with a morale boosting triumph in 60 moves of the Sicilian defense.He stunned the crowd in the 9-Round event organized by the National Chess Federation of the PHilippines.  He earned a surprise third place finish in the company of four chineses chess campaigners.  Fernandez is considered the first Pagadianon who became one of the Top Filipino performer of the 2007 Philippine International Open Chess Championships held on April 10-20, 2007 at Subic Bay Free Port Zone, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, MBA Olongapo City.
