Gov. A.E. Cerilles “It is imperative that we teach our adolescents the importance of balance diet and enough physical exercise. Let them know that from excessive smoking, liquor drinking and too much caffeine intake out of tea, coffee, softdrinks, chocolates and etc. that will destroy their immune system.”
Lady Governor Auring Enerio-Cerilles implored in her message enjoining Zamboanga del Sur people to join the whole nation in celebrating the 33rd year Nutrition Month this July. The 2007 Nutrition month celebration is anchored by a theme: “Healthy Lifestyle ng Kabataan, landas sa kinabukasan.” The theme focuses on the nutrition and health needs of Filipino adolescents particularly on the consumption of nutritious food to prepare them for adulthood and the practice of healthy lifestyle to stay fit and healthy. Adolescence is the period of transition between childhood and adulthood ages from 10 to 19. Cerilles cited the findings of the World Health Organization (WHO) that the spread of non-communicable diseases among adults is the result of poor nutrition and unhealthy lifestyle from their younger years. Provincial Health Officer Ma. Corazon S. Ariosa in last Monday’s flag raising ceremony at the Capitol reminded her co-government employees whose children are in elementary and high schools to give them nutritious foods. She emphasized that skipping breakfast and poor meals are additional factors that contribute to nutrient deficiencies. The Cerilles Administration through the Provincial Nutrition Action Office has lined-up numerous Nutrition Month activities since July 1 which kicked off with the hanging of streamers, recital of 2007 Nutrition Month Prayer and Pledge, hosting radio programs and the like. On July 17 (Tuesday) at 6 in the morning, there will be a Nutri-Walk for a Cause from the city wharf area up to Amusement and Events Center, Capitol Compound. Participants will be given due recognition, like: Earliest Delegation on site; Biggest Office/Institution Delegation; Biggest High School Delegation; Most Colorful Delegation; Liveliest Delegation; Oldest Participant; Miss Nutri-Walk and Mr. Nutri-Walk. On the same day, there will also be a Medical Services to be rendered by the Provincial Health Office at the Capitol Building. A dance competition dubbed as Hataw among and between teenagers the same will be competed by and among the members of the Provincial Nutrition Council at the Amusement and Events Center.{sidebar id=9} The Provincial Gender and Development Council also joined the celebration by holding a Nutri-Symposium among provincial government employees.
