Pagadian City – The Pasalamat Festival is a 10-day festivity that culminates on the Feast of the Sto. Niño. The Feast of Sto. Niño is celebrated on the third Sunday of January every year among Catholics but has become universal enough that everyone celebrates this event.
This year's theme is “Kalinaw… Pinaagi sa Pagsinabtanay, Panaghiusa ug Kaangayan sa Katawhan” (Peace...Through Understanding, Unity and Equality among the People"), a theme very fitting for this trying times. Agro Fair and Garden Show This year's festival officially opened on January 11, 2008. through special highlights like the opening of Agro Fair and Garden Show at Plaza Luz headed by City Tourism Officer Mr. J. Jewelo P. Barios. A Cultural Variety show was also scheduled every 7:00 o’clock in the evening at Plaza Luz ‘Taklobo Stage’ presented by different sectors in the community from the government and non-government organizations. Job Placement and Passport Processing
A total of 15-thousand job vacancies on-the-spot hiring for jobs from local and outside of Pagadian including overseas placement was offered by different recruitment agencies during a two day Job Fair on January 15-16, 2008 at the City Gym. It was recalled that Mayor Co was awarded by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) as Regional Best Local Executive 2007 in solving unemployment problems through the conduct of Job Fairs. The Job Fair is held twice a year during the Fiesta and Araw ng Pagadian celebration on June.A two day Pass Porting was also conducted on January 17-18, 2008 by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Mobile Passporting program at the City Hall Complex.
Different Sea Games activities opened with a Regatta which started on January 16, 2008 at the Port Area spearheaded by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Manager Roger Baylon. The regatta was participated by 12 Coastal Barangays; Bomba, Dumagoc, Kawit, Lumbia, Muricay, Napolan, Poloyagan, Santiago, Sta. Lucia, San Pedro, Tawagan and White Beach.
Everyday a procession around selected routes in the city is done right before the 5:00 pm mass in Sto. Niño Cathedral. Right after the mass, the faithful gather in the front yard of the Cathedral to dance and praise their beloved patron saint. Some of the dance and praise ritual are captured in the photos below.
Today, January 19, 2008 at 4:00 to 6:00 early morning a Concelebrated Mass at the Port Area will be held then followed by a Fluvial Parade around the Yllana Bay particularly at the vicinity of Dao-dao Island and Bibilik then followed by a Procession/Sinulog from the wharf area to the Sto. Nino Cathedral lead by the Knights of Columbus and Knights of the Altar. In the afternoon will be the Pump boat Race, a special event sponsored by Mitsubishi. Only Mitsubishi brand are allowed from 10-HP above and 9-HP below. The race will be followed by the selection of Miss Regatta 2008, awarding and the closing ceremonies.
There are also different activities around the city like the 2nd Pasalamat Fun Climb Festival (Mountain Climbing) at Barangay Lison Valley, some 30-kilometers away from the city that will start at 8:00 o’clock in the morning, Street Lane Racing or Drag Race at F.S. Pajares going to Rotunda at 9:00 a.m., Boxing at the Park at City Hall Complex at 2:00 pm and the Miss Gay Contest at the Plaza Luz Taklobo Stage at 7:00 pm.
“Senator Chiz Escudero will be coming today January 19, 2008 to grace the Pasalamat Festival 2008, Mayor Samuel S. Co told reporters. And for next year's Pasalamat Festival activities, Our Street Dance Competition will be open not only for groups from Pagadian but we will also invite participants from other cities to join,” Mayor Co disclosed.
On the Fiesta Day January 20, 2008, a Street Dance Competition will be conducted at three areas in the main street of the city particularly at the Benigno Aquino street corner Rizal Avenue, Rizal Avenue corner Alano Street and F.
