Pagadian City –The four-day Regional Mathematics Camp organized by the Regional Camp Director, Mr. Ruben Angeles, was successfully concluded here at the Zamboanga del Sur National High School (ZSNH) on November 29 to December 2, 2007. It was participated by almost all Divisions schools both elementary and secondary in Region-9 including the private schools.

Making Mathematics a Pleasure

“The purpose of this regional mathematics camp is to conduct activities in relation to mathematics subject. Actually this is not a regional competition, this is only a fellowship, but there are some activities that are competitive in nature. It is not actually to compete but only a matter of encouragement of each group because it is divided by sub-camp. For every activity each group tries to excel over the other so that their group will be recognized. As I always told the students that we will transform our teaching in our school into a place where learning is a pleasure not a torture for the children. All activities involves the mathematics subjects in order to enhance the learning of the children in mathematics”, ZSNHS principal Roberto D. Bibanco told this writer.

When asked who are the qualified participants and how many participants attended the regional mathematics camp, “All schools are free to send their participants to join in the regional mathematics camp including the elementary schools for the first time. No age limit or restrictions in the grades level. It is up to the schools to screen their participants. With regards to the number of participants, I can not tell you the exact number by school and by Division but as a whole the participation of the students and pupils in the Regional Mathematics camp was the biggest so far held here in our school with more of less 1,700 participants,” Bibanco explained.

Regional Math Camp Not an Assessment

The conduct of the Regional Math camp is not an assessment to the student or pupil whether on what field they belong or are comfortable. In our level here during the start of the school year in the early period, we also conducted our school level Mathematics Camp with the same activities as in the Regional Math Camp. Out of our school level Mathematics Camp, like the winner in the Miss Matinee Idol, for example, will be representing our school during the conduct of the Regional Mathematics Camp.”

When asked if there are any subjects that has the same activities as Math Camp, “Usually in our curriculum, there are only two subjects conducting the camp activities, first is the Science Camp and the second is Math Camp. In the Science Camp, our school already conducted a school level Science Camp. In fact, early next year 2008, we will be scheduling the Regional Science camp as a follow-up to the school level Science Camp. All schools in the entire Region-9 has conducted a school level Science Camp. The guidelines will be determined later by the Regional Dep-Ed Office.”
