Zamboanga City – Educators from all over Mindanao has converged into one family to solve major issues, problems, and concern on educational system especially for Mindanao with its tri-people.

"Responsive Education: The Enduring Road to Peace and Progress in Mindanao”

 DepEd Region 9 Regional Director Jesus L. Nieves said that Education Secretary Jesli A. Lapus is expected to come but on its opening day, November 26, at the Garden Orchids Hotel this city, USEC Ramon Bacani, Undersecretary for Regional Affairs came to open the said activity.

Six (6) regions has attended the three day congress composedof  Department of  Education (DepEd) Regional Directors, Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Heads of School, Prinicpals, and PTCA Presidents from Zamboanga Peninsula Region (Region 9), Northern Mindanao Region (Region 10), Caraga Region (Region 13) and Davao Region (Region 11) Socsargen Region and the Autonomous Region for Mindanao (ARMM).

In his Message, USEC Bacani thanked the host region in its effort to converge educators of Mindanao to solve and share what education should do to help and solve the present situation in Mindanao hampering its peace efforts for a better Mindanao.

"This day marked another milestone in finding ways to solve the issues on peace and progress for the betterment of Mindanao thru educational process that our children will benefit not for now but for our future generations” USec Bacani said.

Asia's Latin City

Meanwhile, Host Mayor Celso Lorenzo Lobregat has greeted the delegates in the name of the “City of Flowers” which local government officials now want to brand as “Asia's Latin City” and warmly welcome all the participants.

”Beinvinidos todos” to all the educators in Mindanao, We in Zamboanga City has made this effort in order to have a pleasant and peaceful place to convey and face issues concerning basic education in Mindanao, and with our support, Zamboanga City is your destination” Lobregat said.

Other Guest who joined the opening day are. MEDCO USEC Virgilio Leyretana Sr., who spoke on the Socio-Economic Status of Mindanao, its impact in Education, Top Executives of the two foreign funded education projects BEAM and EQUALLS, and Major General Nehemias Pajarito , CG of the 1st Infantry "Tabak" Division, PA, who delivered the real peace situation in Mindanao concerning the on-going peace talks between the GRP-MILF, Dr. Grace Rebollos, newly installed President of the Western Mindanao State University, who also shared her ideas and vision on Education and Civil Societies initiatives for education.

Expected also on the three-day congress is USEC Manaros Boronasing, DepED Undersecretary for Muslim Affairs and the newly elected Philippine Asssociation of Schools Superintendents (PASS) Dr. Habib Adzar Sarahadil, Schools Superintendent of Zamboanga del Norte.

Awareness on Basic Education in Mindanao 

Meantime, Regional Director Nieves in a Press Conference said that the congress specifically seeks to, (1)  increase awareness of the present status and situation of basic education in Mindanao, (2) discuss prevailing issues and challenges confronting peace and progress in the Muslim-Christian-Lumad areas in Southern Philippines, and (3) generate appropriate policy recommendations for the road map to basic education in Mindanao.

As host region, he instructed all his subordinates to create working committees to make the affair successful. These committees were headed by Schools Superintendents Adzar Saradhil of Zamboanga del Norte, Manuel Muyargas  of  Zamboanga Sibugay, Visminda Serrato of Zamboanga del Sur, Dolores Alcantara of Zamboanga City, Teresita Coscolan of Dipolog City, Erlinda Salera of Pagadian City, Teodoro Dionglay of Dapitan City and Felix Romy Triambulo of Isabela City.
