On its 6th reactivation anniversary last May 5, five soldiers were given recognition for their heroic acts and meritorious achievements while two mayors and three other civilian individuals received Plaques of Appreciation.
This awards were given for their invaluable efforts and contribution in ensuring the unit’s internal security operation as well as maintaining peace and order in its area of responsibility.
Based in Camp David Sabido, Poblacion Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur under the command of Major Samuel Gayongorsa, the 53rd Infantry (Matapat) Battalion’s also marked its 34th founding anniversary with First Infantry (Tabak) Division Commander, General Nehemias G. Pajarito as the guest of honor.Pajarito was assisted by Gayongorsa in the awarding ceremony. The soldier-awardees include Corporal Pio Jumawan given a Bronze Cross medal for his heroic act resulting to the capture of communist terrorist leader Roel Moñasque, a deputy secretary of Front Committee Kara on October 24, 2007. 1Lt. John Kenneth Babica, TSgt..Rodolfo Tamani and SSgt. Rogelio Tomoy received Military Merit Medal each for their meritorious achievement, in their respective tasks. Babica was platoon leader during the raid in a safe house of notorious MILF leader Kamil Lao aka Ruben on February 2, 2007 in Dalapang, Labangan which eventually neutralized the suspect. Tamani’s act of heroism during a safe house’s raid at Sitio Matab-ang, Pisaan, Dinas that resulted to a recovery of a rocket propelled grenade (RPG) with 2 firing mechanisms, 2 live ammunitions and a Garand rifle. SSgt. Tomoy was instrumental in the recovery of a human skeletal remains hogtied ditched in a deep well as NPA mass grave for suspected military supporters at Bulaan, Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay.
While 2LT Rafael Balincamaya was awarded with military merit medal with second Bronze Anahaw leaf for his gallantry as platoon leader of Scout Platoon in an encounter against 19 communist terrorists under Front Committee Kara at Libayoy, Tigbao and recovered one M14 rifle and M16 rifle. The 53rd IB also recognized the contribution and support given by Mayor Allan Damas of Kumalarang, Dinas Mayor Wilfredo Asoy, Sr., Ruel Molina, Executive Assistant to Governor Aurora E. Cerilles, Provincial Information Officer Allan June Molde and Mary Jane Pansacala of Associates for Integral Development for their significant support to the unit in its internal security operations.
