A 29-year old lass is now suffering from kidney trouble out of her fond of eating junk foods and excessive intake of soft drinks.
She is Cheryl Suano, single living with her widowed mother. Remorseful of the stigma, this girl from San Pedro this city submits herself to hemo-dialysis sessions twice a week costing her at least P5,600 at a private hospital here. However, when she learned that the Zamboanga del Sur Dialysis Center at the Provincial Hospital has already a nephrologist to perform the procedure she was the first renal patient to enjoy the services of the new hemo-dialysis center at lesser expense. It was her 8th dialysis and first at the provincial hospital where she is paying P2,500 per session including professional fee. Lucky as she is, all eyes were on her attending to her needs while sitting comfortably at the coach reading magazine while undergoing a 4-hour cleansing of her blood. Hemo-dialysis means blood cleansing using an artificial kidney, according to Muhammad Hanif, operations manager of Gambro International whose company supplied the 5 units dialysis machines at the Provincial Hospital. Cheryl was attended by Adult Nephrologist Arlyn Moñuz from the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) and two trained nurses – Jean V. Villapas and Dinah P. Estrada. Much to her surprise, Governor Auring E. Cerilles herself came to see her while she is being dialyzed last Wednesday (August 15). She was so thankful to the Governor for establishing the Hemo-Dialysis Center in Pagadian that is accessible and affordable to poor patients like her.
Cheryl recalled that sometime in July, this year she had to go to Cebu for check-up when her face and legs were swelling. At Cebu Doctors she paid P15,000 for consultation and medical examination alone excluding food and transportation expenses. She said now having a Hemo-Dialysis Center, she can save more in terms of money, time and effort as she can go home after the procedure. All she can hope at the moment is that the Almighty will mysteriously heal her ailment and advise the youth to get rid of eating salty foods and rarely drink softdrinks for them not to fall the prey of kidney trouble.
