Pagadian City - The Liga ng Mga Barangay sa Pilipinas, Pagadian City Chapter celebrated its fourth Liga Day on January 19, 2008 at the Liga City with Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero as the guest speaker.
"I know the problem of barangays because I have served them for 20-years when I was a congressman in the First District of Sorsogon. since I assumed as your elected Senator, I have visited two areas only, first is my home land in Bicol Region and Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. I will not promise any projects here in your area because for the past two years since I assumed as your senator, our President GMA which is my Ninang, never gave me Country Wide Development Funds (CDF). But if I have some funds I will never forget Pagadian City and Zamboanga del Sur to allocate some projects," Sen.Escudero told Barangay Officials in his speech.
Escudero gave some guidance to the Barangay Officials to avail in the Government Security Insurance System (GSIS) programs as provided by the newly approved law. Most problems encountered by some Barangay Officials was the distruction of government infrastructures and agricultural products due to calamities. Barangay Officials can now avail of of funds from the GSIS which demands only 2% premium of the loaned value per year. We can easily recover our loses during calamities by paying a small amount which is very affordable from the funds in the Barangay, Escudero explained.
Escudero requested support from the Barangay Officials regarding his newly approved bill that need amendments in fighting against juvenile delinquency. The bill stipulates that arrest of minors will be prohibited. The problems is thatsome criminal syndicates are using minors in committing crimes, so we need your help. Escudero was introduced by City DILG Operations Officer James Yañez. Also present during the event was 2nd District Congressman and NPC Regional Chair Antonio "Tony" Cerilles, Mayor Samuel S. Co, Governor Aurora "Auring" Cerilles and City Councilors Ben Culve, Arnold Gavenia, and Noli Garcia. Mayor Co also distributed 9mm pistols to the newly elected Barangay Chairmen. The said 9mm pistols were issued by former Congressman Real during his incumbency to the Barangay Chairmen and was surrendered to the DILG after they lost in the last Barangay and SK Elections. Executive Order No. 204 dated December 6, 2004, declared the 3rd Saturday of January as Barangay Day of Pagadian City. Last update : 26-01-2008 22:56
