 DENR RED ADOBO (click photo) “Very few of us grasp the reality of global warming phenomenon,” observes Regional Director Ernesto Adobo, Jr. of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources as he persuades the public’s participation for the Earth Day People’s Caravan here today.
Adobo states that if World War I and II were about territory and power supremacy between powerful countries while Gulf War was the fight over oil deposits; World War III is projected to be a skirmish for water. In fact, he adds, as early as 10 am today grabe na ang kainit.” Adobo cautions the public officials, department heads of the different government agencies, representatives of the different civic organizations and NGOs in the province during the finalization meeting for the conduct of Earth Day People’s Caravan in the city over a week ago. Adobo urges the attendees to participate in the Earth Day People’s Caravan the whole day activities where Pagadian City plays a host for the contingent of Region IX before it proceeds to Region X particularly in Cagayan de Oro City for the convergence of Mindanao cluster involving three other regions – XI, XII and XIII collectively moving for the protection of environment.
DENR being the initiator of the Earth Day People’s Caravan discloses that it started April 14 until April 18 for Mindanao cluster. For Region IX, Zamboanga City and Zamboanga del Norte including Dipolog City contingents commenced the caravan at their respective areas, yesterday, they traveled towards Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. The three contingents proceeded to this city to converge with Zamboanga del Sur delegation before proceeding to Cagayan de Oro tomorrow (April 17). Before reaching Pagadian, they had a “whistle stop” at Dumalinao municipal grounds to draw awareness among the people.Today is a grand event for Pagadian and Zamboanga del Sur. An alay lakad around the city dubbed as “Lakbay para sa Kalikasan” kicks off the whole day activities participated in by LGUs, NGAs, academe, NGOs, POs, church, business sector and other civic organizations. DENR Secretary Lito Atienza sent his Assistant secretary for Legal Affairs Michelle Angelica Go to grace the affair. Go’s presence concretizes Atienza’s pronouncement that 2008 shall be the agency’s year for Information, Education and Communication Campaign (IEC). The caravan is maximizing participation of the local government units to educate its constituents about the need to conserve water and energy and above all protecting the environment from destruction. A program about caring the environment follows at Plaza Luz where an exhibit on solid waste management, clean water technology, wildlife conservation, Green Philippines program will be displayed. Aside from its participation during the walk for environment, the Provincial Government hosts a forum on climate change and global warming which sparks interest from the local media, environmentalists, public officials, NGOs and other stakeholders. A press conference followed. In the evening, a cultural show depicting the destruction of the environment resulting to climate change and global warming is also offered for the public to witness at the Amusement and Events Center, Capitol Grounds here. On the following day (April 17), the Region IX contingent will leave for Iligan City then finally stops in Cagayan de Oro on the 18th where contingents from the four other regions in Mindanao will converge there.
