Why invest on early childhood?

This topic was answered during the 3-day Advocacy training on the implementation of RA No. 8980 otherwise called as Early Childhood Care and Development Act.

PECCDO has converged the Municipal Early Childhood Care and Development Officers, Municipal Health Officers, Municipal Social Welfare & Development Officers, Municipal Accountants, Municipal Budget Officers and Municipal Planning & Development Coordinators for them to understand the importance of investing on early childhood in the municipal level.

Provincial Early Childhood Care and Development Office (PECCDO)

Zamboanga del Sur as a Child-Friendly province has established the Provincial Early Childhood Care and Development Office (PECCDO) with Mrs. Gumersinda A. Molde as the Office head.  It is the thrust of the Cerilles Administration in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Educational Fund (Unicef) to assure that the basic rights of children are known to them, such as: survival; development; protection and participation.

The right to be born, to have a name and nationality falls on the early childhood stage of children where ages 0 to 6 years covers the formative stage of the child, PECCD Officer Molde stated.

Bright Child A Goal to Attain

“We want to attain the goal of a “Bright Child” in this province to have happy and healthy children who will be able to develop their full potentials,” the ECCD officer further said.

The 3-day advocacy training at Roxan Hotel here, Molde has invited Provincial Health Officer Corazon S. Ariosa to discuss on the Maternal and Child Health Care.

Dra. Ariosa said that during pregnancy, a mother should be fully immunized and must get at least 4 complete prenatal check-ups; when giving birth, she should be attended by a trained personnel and when at risk she gets an emergency obstetric.

Children must be registered at birth. Infants are exclusively breastfed up to 6 months – complementary feeding is recommended when the child reaches 6 months.  During this period up to 11 months, children are given doses of vitamin A and get immunized.

All Children from 3-6 Years Old Must attend Early Education

Molde said that on child’s development, all children 3-6 years old must attend early education program.  Anchored by this principle, the Early Childhood Care and Development Center that supervises the Day Care Centers in different barangays are established as mandated by RA 8980.

The early childhood care and development act embodies the following: 1) integration of range of health; 2) early education; 3) nutrition and 4) psycho-social care.
