Garbage is everybody’s concern that the national government has empowered all local government units to implement Republic Act No. 9003 otherwise known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2002.

Although Zamboanga del Sur has formulated an Action Plan on Solid Waste Management for 2006-2015 in compliance to RA No. 9003 but it is yet to be finalized.

Fortunately, the Philippine Environmental Governance (EcoGov) is around to extend technical assistance to the province on how to  manage solid wastes.

True to its mandate, the EcoGov last August 21 conducted a planning workshop on Urban Environmental Management among the solid waste  stakeholders in the province with Victor Luis, Jr., EcoGov’s Technical Director on Urban Environmental Management (UEM).

In a meeting with the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board-Technical Working Group, Governor Auring E. Cerilles was optimistic that UEM  will help much in strengthening  and finalizing the 10-year Solid Waste Management Plan of the province.

The governor was elated to note that the presentation of the EcoGov 2 technical assistance package is based on the needs of the Zamboanga del Sur.

The lady governor admitted that in the past years, her administration has been decisive in coaching the people’s attitude toward proper waste disposal but lamentably it is not yet fully adapted by the people.

In 2002, for her to implement RA 9003, she issued Executive Order No. 11 creating the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board.

{sidebar id=9}Likewise, this move motivated all municipal local government units (MLGUs) to initiate their own activities relative to  Solid Waste Management but still they lack technical knowledge how to sustain the program.

Equipped with the technical plan, Cerilles is looking forward to implement RA 9003 effectively.

She said  that with the proper technology and strong mechanism provided under UEM of the EcoGov,  no doubt the province can have proper solid waste disposal.

For Solid Waste Management activities, Cerilles has assigned   Provincial Administrator Pepito Degamo and Provincial Board Member Miguelito Ocapan to represent her.
