LOCAL ENVIRONMENT GROUP in Pagadian City criticized the Arroyo administration for implementing anti-environment policies despite the environmental problem the world is facing nowadays.
Rudy Arpon, head of the Care for the Environment Program of the Social Action Center said that the granting of mining permits to giant mining corporations is a clear indication that government is siding with those who have the capacity to ruin the environment.
Arpon said that mining operation is one of the contributing factors why the world including the Philippines is facing Global Warming or Climate Change. He also said that global warming is a phenomenon that shows abnormal weather conditions and unbearable heat and that forest denudation that resulted to frequent landslides, flash floods and tragic mudslides can be attributed to large scale mining.
Arpon went on to say that the government should stop granting permits to large scale mining and implement programs for the restoration of the environment before it becomes too late.
And that mining applications in Midsalip and Bayog towns should be blocked by the local government and residents as well to prevent these companies from acquiring permits from the environment department.
He further said that ecological imbalance is due to human massive destruction, so it’s the man himself who should take care of the restoration of the environment. “Mabuhi pa ang kinaiyahan bisan walay tawo apan ang tawo dili mabuhi ug wala ang kinaiyahan ang tubig, hangin ug ang adlaw”, he stressed.
