At least 40 fishermen gathered on a consultation last September 9 at the Old Slaughterhouse facility in Barangay Dumagoc, Pagadian City to discuss the City Government’s plan to declare Puting Balas as an additional fish sanctuary.
According to the fishermen, it is an injustice on their part if Puting Balas be declared a sanctuary as they already have lesser catch since the government declared DawDaw Island a sanctuary. Candi Hawani, a fisherman from Barangay San Pedro, Pagadian City aired his opinion saying that they could no longer sustain food for their family if ever they could no longer fish at the Putting Balas area. He added that the government officials should conduct a consultation to those who were directly affected by the plan before taking any move, and not merely talk to the owners of the large-scale fishers because those people are not directly affected with it. Moreover, Hawani and some other fishermen invited their colleagues for a consultation regarding the threat to their livelihood as they plan to take action on the issue. He feared that if other fishermen could no longer fish due to lack of fishing grounds in the area, they {sidebar id=9}would then stay at their homes jobless, with no other alternatives to sustain the daily need of their families as most of the fishermen in the City were not able to attend school.
