The Josefina H. Cerilles State College is now 6 years in existence.  It is the first home-grown State College in the province which now has 16 extension campuses all over Zamboanga del Sur.

The celebration was held last Saturday (August 11) with a mass at the Sto. Niño Cathedral.  It was followed by a colorful parade around the city with its President Carlicita A. Saniel leading other officials, campus administrators, faculty members and students.

Its founder former Governor Vicente “Enteng” Cerilles and Gov. Auring Enerio-Cerilles were the guests of honor for the affair.

It may be recalled that in 1984, Governor Enteng first established a memorial  high school in honor of his late wife, Josefina Herrera who was then a school teacher. Several decade passed, his son, Congressman Antonio Cerilles established the Josefina H. Cerilles Polytechnic College in Mati, San Miguel, this province which aimed at bringing college education near to the doorsteps of the poor but deserving students who wish to earn a college degree.

Governor Auring Cerilles, in her anniversary greeting had to look back at those years of great struggles and sacrifices that according to her “made us greet this day with profound gratitude.”

It was during her incumbency as Congresswoman of the 2nd District of this province that the conversion of Josefina H. Cerilles Polytechnic College into a State College was made possible after passing into law Republic Act No. 9159.

“JHCSC is the evidence of the pioneering efforts and commitment of the Cerilleses to build an enduring legacy that will shape the lives and destiny of our people and free them from the barriers of costly and inaccessible college education,” lady governor Cerilles said.

She emphasized in saying: “Education is our strongest armor in winning over the challenges of our time. It is the well-spring of power that will enable us in every way to conquer ignorance and deprivation. And education is primarily the most crucial requisite in building a strong Republic.
