Heavy rains did not hinder the local media of Zamboanga del Sur from visiting the award-winning municipality of the province adjudged as the Most Child Friendly Municipality in Region 9 the second time around.
The visit was one activity of the Zambosur Communication Task Force as one component of the Unicef’s Sixth Country Program for Children headed by Provincial Information Officer Allan June A. Molde who invited 11 media personalities representing the print, broadcast and electronic media. Vincenzo Sagun was 60-kilometer away from Pagadian City (the capital city of Zamboanga del Sur), classified as a Fifth Class Municipality. For over an hour ride by land amid the heavy downpour, the media arrived safely in Vincenzo Sagun and was welcomed by Municipal Mayor Edilberto Adlaon together with his Municipal Technical Working Group (MTWG). The media visit aimed at knowing the best practices of Vincenzo Sagun being a child-friendly municipality. A press conference was held at the SB Session Hall where each MTWG member were given three (3) minutes to share the activities and experiences which summed up to the success of their unified efforts. {sidebar id=5}Most Child-Friendly Town Last October 30 in Zamboanga City, Mayor Adlaon and the MTWG received their Plaque of Recognition as Most Child-Friendly town in Zamboanga Peninsula plus P50,000 cash prize for the second time. When asked about the secret of winning the most coveted award for two consecutive years, Mayor Adlaon disclosed that it was “teamwork.” In fact, at present, all the 14 barangays in Vincenzo Sagun have established and functional Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPCs). Mayor Adlaon shared that his administration has invested so much for the welfare of the children as he believed that no better investment can be worth more than anything else. Even their ordinances are geared towards the protection and promotion of the rights of children. “We envisioned to have happy, normal and fully equipped children,” he said. “Manlimbasog gayod kami alang sa kaugmaon sa among mga kabataan (We really strive hard for the better future of our children),” Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator Meriline Locson told the media. This is the main reason why we strengthen our brain-child “Kaagapay sa Kabataan,” Locson added. Municipal Interior and Local Government Operations Officer Jesusa “Inday” Cañon attributed the success of their Child-Friend movement to their ever supportive, dynamic and child advocate municipal Mayor.
