President Gloria Macapagal –Arroyo created task forces on revenue enhancement and anti-smuggling as she committed that the government would bounce back from its collection shortfall in the first half of the year.
The government has repeatedly assured that it will be sticking to its P63-billion budget deficit target for the year During a command conference this morning with BIR officials, President Arroyo congratulated the agency for exceeding its July collection target by P2 billion. This is the collection agency’s first surplus this year. In a similar Command Conference of the Bureau of Customs (BoC) last Friday, the President congratulated the bureau for exceeding its target for July by P1.2 billion. The President, likewise, reminded customs officials to further improve the collection of duties and taxes to make up for the agency’s deficiency in the first six months of the year. She also directed Presidential Anti-Smuggling Group head Undersecretary Antonio Villar to intensify his campaign to be able to collect taxes due the government. The BIR’s target is to raise P730 billion while the BoC was given a P228 billion target this year to enable the government to achieve its P1.1 trillion-revenue target. Last update : 18-08-2007 12:11
