The celebration dubbed as the “39th Araw ng Pagadian” has the City Government preparing for several events and competition lined up for 10 consecutive days and the kick off was on June 12 when the city officialdom headed by City Mayor Samuel S. Co joined the entire nation in commemorating the 110th Independence Day.

Last Thursday (June 12), Mayor Co called a press conference where he formally announced that Mindanaoan Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri is the Honored Guest during the Anniversary Program (June 21) while on the 19th, singer-comedienne Ethel Booba will entertain the public during the coronation night of the winners of the search for Miss Pagadian 2008 which events will be held at the city gymnasium.

Co, the youngest ever elected mayor of this booming capital city announced that the 39th Araw ng Pagadian celebration will be very special since this would be the first time that the city administration will honor past city officials for their efforts and contributions. This will be one of the highlights during the anniversary program, he pointed out.

This year’s theme: “Pagadian Malambuon, Katawhan Mauswagon,” tells in a nutshell how Pagadian has progressed today the living condition of its people improved. Co noted that in spite of economic turmoil being felt globally, Pagadian has been able to sustain its economic stability.

"Our city is gradually but surely becoming one of the most progressive cities in Mindanao,” the Mayor of Chinese ethnic origin remarked as he named new hotels, restaurants and big malls that are now in the city and which have enticed more banks to put up branches here, that would help spur economic activity and eventually attract more investors to employ more people.

Moreover, Co regarded the winning of the long and tedious battle for the realization of the regional center in Region IX, as a big factor in the city’s development. In fact, he disclosed that this year, the city government will commence the construction of a multi-million 5-storey commercial building at the shopping center.

Part of this complex will be occupied by some regional offices, Co said while there will be three other separate complexes for regional offices. One in Balintawak for the PNP regional command, DILG, DENR, DepEd, among others; second is in Lenienza where the Department of Agriculture, Department of Agrarian Reform have already occupied and third is in Dao to be known as regional financial complex for the Department of Budget and Management, Bureau of Finance, Commission on Audit and National Economic and Development Authority and also to include the Department of Health regional office that will be probably accommodated near the soon to be opened Zambosur Medical Center.

Mayor Co concluded that what Pagadian has achieved today is made possible through the intercession of the Divine Providence even he enjoined all Pagadianons to thank Almighty God for His Divine Guidance and urged the people to continue working hand-in-hand for a better future. (RSA)
