Six teams raced for an adventure of a lifetime in Gukod 2008 Adventure Race for Newbies last May 11 at the Provincial Government Center, Dao. The activity was initiated by Habagat and was supported by the Provincial Tourism Office, still as part of the 1st ZamboSur Summer Fest.
The race was patterned from the popular American reality show Amazing Race wherein participants have to go head-to-head in various physical and mental challenges. But what made this particular race unique was that the contestants were all novices. Provincial Tourism Officer Anthony Frederick Padayhag said that the good thing about the local version was that all racers were first-timers, making it a more exciting and a “fair and square” competition dismissing professional bikers, mountaineers, and athletes from joining the event. Light rain did not stop the participants as well as the marshals of Habagat from getting on the action. 10 control points with corresponding task for each team were situated around the Provincial Government Center. Among them were the Butterfly Garden, ZamboSur Medical Center, Kiddie Park, Bulwagan, Agro-Tourism and Heritage Complex, and Cultural Village. The teams with three members each likewise enjoyed the challenge at the Canopy Walk and took a slide at the Zip Line. The race started and ended at the Biyahe Na Stage. The six contending teams were the Vanguards, Miarru, Pacillan Architects, Lover’s Moon, Alindahaw, and PPB (Provincial Press Bureau). After three hours of exciting adventure and healthy competition, Team Vanguards (from Aurora and the only team outside Pagadian) emerged victorious. Grabbing the second spot were the Pacillan Architects and completing the list of successful racers was the team of Lover’s Moon. The organizers expressed their heartfelt thanks to all the racers saying that without the participants there would be no race. They also reminded the racers that the important thing in the race was the adventure of a lifetime everyone had regardless of crossing the finish line or not. Prizes at stake were P 3000 for the champion, P 2000 for the second placer, and P 1000 for the third placer. There were also consolation prizes distributed for the rest of the teams.
