A team of the National Transmission Corporation-Northwestern Mindanao District (District 1) conducted an information drive on transmission line safety last September 14 at the Guipos National High School, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur.
Over 800 first to fourth year students, faculty member and parents attended the information drive held in two morning sessions. The Transco team, composed of Principal Engineer Amado Dableo, Eduardo Cabahug, Security Officer and Ma. Rosette B. Martinez, Corporate Communications Specialist, conducted the activity to raise awareness on power transmission line safety among the school populace. A new building is under construction and is near a 69,000 volt power line of Transco. Several practical ways to avoid accidents with power lines were taught to the participants by Engineer Dableo. These included “no flying of kites near the lines,” “no climbing on wood poles” and “no carrying of long sticks in vertical position when walking under the power lines.” Dableo also emphasized to the students to refrain from hitting the brown plate-like insulators hanging from the wires with stones using a sling to avoid “grounding” that may lead to electrical induction to any person in certain circumstances. Cabahug on the other hand appealed to the students and parents to be vigilant against pilferers who illegally steal bolt clamps and guy wires from the wood poles of 69 kilovolt (kv) lines and angle bars and bolts from 138 kv lines of Transco. He stressed continued stealing of parts from the lines will weaken the towers and wood poles and can lead to their toppling especially during typhoons. Cabahug said in the event that a tower or wood pole topples, widespread blackouts will occur, and a more serious outcome, the safety of the people in the area is threaten. As a matter of standard operating procedure (SOP), Transco substation personnel would attempt to re-energize within one minute lines that trip or for lines where auto-reclosers are installed, they automatically re-energize within seconds. Electrocution is one incident that may occur when lines topple and are re-energized instantaneously. Transco encouraged the participants to help in the anti-pilferage campaign by reporting any incident or person involved in the theft of parts from the government-owned power transmission lines that supply electricity to electric distributors like electric coops.
