The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) Zambo. Sur, Pagadian City Chapter expressed much concern about the recent controversial UP tuition fee hike because it will certainly deplete the UP Alumnis Scholarship Fund in no time. Beginning SY 2007-2008, UP education already costs P1, 000.00 per unit.

This is a huge threefold leap from the P300-per-unit level that has been in place since 1990. However, the commitment of the UP Alumni in bridging the gap between poverty and quality education through its Scholarship Program remains unfazed and intact. Thus, in its General Assembly last August 25, 2007, its members unanimously approved to hold a major Scholarship Fund Raiser on October 7, 2007.

Details will be announced as soon as these will be available. The UP Alumni is also considering other strategies to assure a sustainable source of its Scholarship Fund. Atty. Mary Ann Wong Tugbang, the UP Alumni Chapter President, requested DTI Provincial Director Marichu Malate-Atay and Pagadian City Chamber of Commerce President Merlou SyEgco-Quisumbing, both members of the UP Alumni Board of Directors, to survey and identify potential economic ventures fit for UPAA as a socio-civic non-governmental organization.

Lastly, the author was appointed as the new Chapter Secretary to serve until the end of the current term. The position was vacated by Cecille Galang who earlier resigned.
