Page 1 of 4 The statement made by the Armed Forces of the Philippines about beating the New Peoples Army and other enemies of the State without the assistance of US government is enough warranty for the Filipino people.
But if we look back to the 50s during the Korean War, the AFP statement may only be true insofar as the US intervention is concerned. History tells us that later in the day US troops had to withdraw from the war-torn Peninsula when the Korean’s nationalism has ripened to a point that its citizens stood to death for their freedom and liberty. Our country is similarly situated to that of Korea today, and truly we need no foreign assistance to quell the rising discontent of people, some place, where our government miserably fail to look into the problems of poverty, injustice and abuses by those in power. The obstacles to lasting peace are manifest everywhere in the country. In Zamboanga del Sur alone, a province of 24 municipalities and 1 city with a population of 1,333,456 inhabitants as of May 2006, mostly migrants from the Visayas and Luzon, but about 25% of the populace are the so-called surviving aborigines’ or members of the cultural communities belonging to the Subanen tribe, poverty indisputably exist, a social illness that reduces our capability to search for peace owing to government mismanagement, abuse and injustice.
