The world has long suffered not for anything else but for GREED. There is an insatiable quest for getting the most, having the greatest and achieving the fullest at others’ expense. No one seems to be satisfied with just being rewarded the fair share of his or her labors. No one wants to just live; they also would like to see others live no more. No more such things as “let live”.
Everyone also has developed the attitude and habit of being commercial. The government, particularly, does not anymore concern it self with just delivering the basic services; it is engrossed in gaining what it can out of anything it can deliver. There is no more such thing as public service fro free; there is simply public service for a fee. Graft and corruption is the culprit. Our people had been reduced into only two (2) kinds, namely, the gainer and the loser. To be on the gaining bargain, you have to be commercial. Or you have to be corrupt. And in the face of this tragic fact, our society has shown its propensity for being cruel. Wittingly or unwittingly, natural or by design, society has become cruel, particularly to the oppressed, the deprived and the less privileged. Let me cite some of the blatant and glaring examples of these cruelties. When one is in dire financial straits, he goes to a money lender who takes advantage of him by lending him money at usurious or high interest rates. Instead of helping the financially distressed person, he is pushed farther down the drain of financial burden. He ends-up deeply mired in utter indebtedness. Today, eight out every ten Filipinos are indebted no end. When a water service subscriber is unable to pay the monthly billings fro water consumption, particularly for three consecutive months, he is summarily disconnected. Water, which is life itself, is deprived. And so, the depressed subscriber is snapped out to death (technically speaking). When seeking a redress for grievance through the courts, one is appalled by the imposition of filing fees and other legal fees, not to include those that you have to shell out fro getting services of an attorney. Justice is only for the moneyed. Dying is even more expensive nowadays. And when a poor soul bound for the grave needs services of church ministers, he/she normally gets shabby attentions, while the reach is heaped upon with colorful and oftentimes wordy rituals, because the love ones can afford to pay the religious exaction. I can only pray that God is not asleep. Last update : 07-09-2007 14:15
