Elements of the 53rd Infantry Battalion and 5th Infantry Battalion, both under the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division, Philippine Army conducted combat operation after receiving information from residents in the area and encountered around twenty (20) fully armed NPA guerillas at the boundary of Brgy. Lucuan, Lakewood and Brgy. Libayoy, Tigbao, all of Zamboanga del Sur last October 19, 2007.
The firefight lasted for about ten (10) minutes which resulted to the recovery of two (2) M16 rifles and the killing of three (3) NPAs including one (1) Amazon. Also recovered from the scene of the encounter are subversive documents. They immediately scampered in different directions bringing with them their wounded companions. Maj Samuel Gayongorsa, Commanding Officer of the 53rd IB said that the firefight took place when the operating troops led by 1Lt Pedro A Dacanay Jr, were fired upon by the NPAs while they were verifying the veracity of the information from the civilians. In another development, another encounter transpired on October 21, 2007 while troops of 53IB are pursuing the NPAs. Immediately after the encounter, two (2) NPA guerillas surrendered to the elements of 53rd Infantry Battalion, with their high powered firearms: one (1) M14 and one (1) M16. 53IB suffered one killed in action indentified as PFC Amado Elaydo. Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and clamor mines with complete accessories were also recovered in a follow up operations. Col Jovencio V Magalso, Commanding Officer of 102nd Infantry Brigade, ordered the concerned units to conduct pursuit operations against the remnants of the fleeing NPA guerillas who scampered in the hinterlands of the municipalities of Lakewood and Tigbao, all of ZDS. The Tabak Chief, MGen Nehemias G Pajarito, commended the officers and men of the 5th Infantry Battalion, under Lt Col Ramon Florece and 53rd Infantry (Matapat) Battalion, under Maj Samuel Gayongorsa, for the remarkable accomplishment with the end view of clearing the areas from those who would like to disturb the peace and order situation in the area.
