Dead Marines into a Military Huey Chopper/AP Photo/Al Jacinto The Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society-Sibugay Region based in Pagadian City “vehemently condemns the mutilation of 10 dead bodies of marine soldiers in Basilan on July 11, 2007 by alleged Muslim groups.”
In a statement dated July 16, 2007, Sibugay Region Chairperson Sultan Maguid Maruhom said that the beheadings was done in retaliation for the killing of a blind Imam in Basilan by alleged government forces, as reported by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society vehemently condemns the mutilation of 10 dead bodies of marine soldiers in Basilan on July 11, 2007 by alleged Muslim groups. The reason that such cruel act as the beheading of dead bodies was done in retaliation for the killing by suspected government forces of an old blind Imam in Basilan, in any way does not condone such barbaric act of revenge – as revenge in any manner is unlawful. Furthermore, Islam considers dead bodies as sacred and must be respected at all times. The encounter of MILF and Government Forces arising from alleged violation of the ceasefire agreement that caused such tragic misdeed is expected in an area of conflict. Nonetheless, Muslims throughout the world are unanimous in the belief that acts of mutilation are evil misdeeds and Islam, in agreement with international law and universal standard of human rights condemns it vigorously and unambiguously that no room for justification is permitted. Doing an evil act in reaction to an evil deed is similarly admonished. Even as we join other groups in condemning this vicious act, we also appeal to all our people to practice sobriety and calmness in the midst of all the confusion arising from the abduction of Fr. Giancarlo Bossi, the alleged killing of a Muslim religious leader and the mutilation of the dead marine soldiers. Our sad history in the 1970s that brought untold miseries and sufferings for thousands of our innocent people in Mindanao is threatening to repeat itself, due to these deplorable happenings that bring religious sentiments. Deplorably, the succession of unfortunate events is unfolding like dominos that seemingly points to one direction – the erosion of the healthy relations of Muslims and Christians nourished by respect and compassion. Sages of our time warn, the defeat of our effort in forging understanding and unity will have far-reaching consequences in our lives and the vast majority who yearned for a peaceful and harmonious co-existent will have remain a dream denied by the wickedness of the few.We ask our people to pray for guidance from the Almighty; and even as we fervently ask for Devine Mercy, in the midst of this trying time we are called upon to double our effort in working for understanding and peace. Above all, as stewards (khaliffah) we are entrusted this divine mission for peace and mercy. Last update : 13-01-2008 12:16
