Pagadian City – In an exclusive interview with this reporter, Mayor Samuel S. Co bared his decision to support the retention of the Chief of Police (COP) Oscar Buenaobra. This reaction came about in response to a manifesto by court employees and judges against Buenaobra. (Click here to read about manifesto).
Mayor Samuel S. Co “I respect the decision of the Judges and the court employees but then again for me whatever wrong doing done by our Chief of Police (COP) Oscar Buenaobra should only be reprimanded and he should not be replaced or relieved,” Mayor Samuel Co said. “However, if those complainants are discontented they can always file a case pero dili lang e-relieve or ilisan ang atong COP,” Mayor Co added. Mayor Co called a meeting with businessmen to get their reaction and decision regarding the petition. The businessmen requested the mayor to retain COP Buenaobra. “COP Buenaobra has done his job in maintaining the peace and order in the city. We are better off today compared before he became the chief of police in the city. Our peace and order has improved a lot, criminality has decreased, killings, drugs, snatching and car napping, so with all these factors it is very unfair also to Buenaobra to relieve him immediately just because of a minor incident”, Mayor Co explained. Mayor Co said. (trans.: All of us can make mistakes, may we be a lawyer, doctor, politician - nobody is exempted especially when our pride is at stake. Like what happened where Buenaobra was asked to surrender his firearm even if he is the COP. As if they are not used to this, although in one way it is in their discretion considering in the Justice Hall they can make their own policy. If Buenaobra made a mistake, it is a mistake that is highly understandable, and not a very grave mistake that was premeditated.)”. Mayor Co said. It was learned that Mayor Co also personally wrote a letter for the retention of COP Buenaobra; “Of course I respect the decision of the courts kay nasakitan man pud sila pero siguro dili pud sila mahiubos nako nga mihimo ko ug lakang for the retention of Buenaobra, kay ang ilang lakang is to show to the police force nga dili sila pwede ibasta-basta nalang himoan ug ingun ana nga hitabo para we have to respect the justice hall also otherwise asa man ta moadto kung naay conflict? Didto jud ta magdaug sa justice system, but with the minor incident it thus not warrant that the only solution is to relieve the chief of police compared to the accomplishments he has done. Simply said I would be very reasonable - tolerable or not tolerable the mistake that was done. All of us know that the peace and order condition have improved very much.” Co said. (trans.: Of course I respect the decision of the courts because they were aggrieved but I don’t think they will be upset if I take action for the retention of Buenaobra. Their manifesto is an action to show the Police that they (Judiciary) cannot be taken lightly like what has happened so that we will respect the Justice Hall. Otherwise, where will we go in case of conflict? It is in the justice system that we will resolve our issues, but with the minor incident it does not warrant that the only solution is to relieve the chief of police compared to the accomplishments he has done. Simply said I would be very reasonable - tolerable or not tolerable the mistake that was done. All of us know that the peace and order condition have improved very much”.)
